Life and Voices of Atlantic Beach

For the last several months I’ve worked on a story about the once segregated beach along the Grand Strand called Atlantic Beach. In the days of segregation, the town was a Mecca for African Americans locked out of the area’s other beaches.

Today with folks able to go as they please, Atlantic Beach has struggled to find a way to develop and become a part of the larger community.

I produced the above video and this stills gallery along with a gallery of historical photos gathered by Atlantic Beach resident Alice Graham and used with her permission.

Here is the second video in my Common Chords column. This was shot with the 5D’s and notice the image quality difference between this one and the first shot with my old Canon HV 20.

Go to thesunnews.com for the full story, audio clips on my other blog called Common Chords.

More 5D Video examples

So over the last few months, I’ve had some time to work with the video features of my Canon 5Ds. I’m really enjoying these cameras and love the quality I get by using the Canon “L” lenses for video. The file sizes are huge so I’m constantly finding ways to remove stuff from my computers to make way for the next video. I spent the first two-hours after today’s video shoot burning DVDs so I could start working on the editing.

The biggest problem with the camera is the inability to monitor the audio input of the camera. Today, while working outside with remote mics and in a brisk wind, I wasn’t sure I had good quality with my audio until I returned to the office and looked at the clips through Quicktime. I spend most of my stress time worrying about this problem.

All in all the good outweighs the bad and I’m happy with the results.

Next week I’m publishing the second installment of my Common Chords photo/video column and this video was shot with the new cameras. The difference in quality is amazing.

No place like home….

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since I moved into my little house in Ocean Isle Beach. Ten years is a long time to gather memories of the people who have visited me in this modest place next to the Intracoastal Waterway. I remember too many times and faces to list here.

So to all who graced me with a visit, thank you and come see me after my move to the South.

Wrestlin’

North squad wrestler Shawn White of Richland High School and Will Long the South squad wrestler from Camden High School go for a win in action of The North/South Dual Match Friday evening at North Myrtle Beach. White won this match but the South won the overall match in a battle between some of the best state high school wrestlers.

I shot this awesome high school wrestling competition on Friday evening in North Myrtle Beach. I struggled with getting the names of the competitors correct because the supplied line-up sheets were wrong and the high school names were just abbreviated. Details are my life.
