Common Chords

Today I started a new photo column/blog called “Common Chords” at The Sun News. “Chords” will run in Friday’s paper as a centerpiece with an extended caption and then push our readers online to view a video and/or audio clips.

I got the idea from my love of music and inspiration from my boss Steve Jessmore. His “Sense of Community” column while at The Journal in Flint, Michigan is the barometer, which photo columns are judged.

Will this save my job? Who knows? The work does help me carry on and not think too much of the problems going on at American newspapers.

The New Canon 5D Mark II and Zola Budd

Using my new Canon photo/video gear, I put this video together of former Olympian Zola Budd training last week at Coastal Carolina University. Luckily, I just added two Canon 5D Mark II cameras that replaced my aging EOS 1D Mark IIs.

So far I like the video features but I wish the cameras had a controllable and movable video monitor, which could be pulled out and adjusted when you shoot low angles.

Another negative is the inability to monitor the sound input when using external mics. On windy days like the day I shot this video that is a big problem.

All in all this is the camera that finally helps me forget the old days of film. The quality of the still images is wonderful and getting back the full use of my lenses with the full-frame sensor is a big improvement.

Thanks Canon for answering my plea for a video/still camera workhorse.
